Why does film matter?
Beyond the ability to tell the cameras apart by the sound of their shutter, film photography is an enchanting, hands on process.
Film means time. It forces the photographer to slow down so they don't waste a shot. The "decisive moment" becomes more important than rapid firing and capturing the same image 20 times.
We're connecting with our subject. It's not about "can I see the back of the camera?". It's about staying in the moment and enjoying the experience.
There is also a look to film images that is difficult for even the best digital filters to imitate. Even if you don't know why, the images feel classic and timeless.
Working with film also means we're editing with silver and light, not computer pixels. We have to know how each film, developer, paper and process brings out the best in each other and the subject.
Perhaps most critically, with film and darkroom prints, you aren't reliant on keeping pace with technology to retain your most important moments. There are even methods that use the sun to create a print.
